Appositive § Appositive

Appositive?

This man, a lawyer, lives near my house.
We, young people, should do our duties.
Do you betray Mr. Morgan, your bosom friend?
  I bought a dictionary, a red-covered one.
I cannot see my grandfather again, a regretful thing.
The news, that Mr. Wilson has come to Hong Kong, is untrue.
  Let us three go together.
The story that he is in love with her is going round.
  * "that he is in love with her" 是同位語。

have + sth + pp 句式

here are at least two different constructions involved here.

1. You can cause someone to do something:

I will have the mechanic look at my car.
I will have John come to see you tomorrow

This is a little formal.

2. You can cause something to be done.

I will have my car repaired.
I will have the matter looked into.

3. You can express the idea that you will not tolerate something.

I will not have dogs digging up my garden.
I won't have you smoking at your age.

2: Ahead sat an old man.

A tree was planted there,但中文卻不會說「那邊被種了一棵樹」。

The morning newspaper was put on the gilded Fujian lacquer tray.

第二種:用There is句式─There is the morning newspaper on the gilded Fujian lacquer tray.

On the gilded Fujian lacquer lay the morning newspaper. laylie的過去式,是主動動詞,直譯是:當天的報躺在描金的福建漆盤子裡。

One has put the morning newspaper on the gilded Fujian lacquer tray.

其他可用此種倒裝句的動詞包括:climb, come, fly, go, lie, run, sit, stand等。

AS AGREED,WE ISSUE THE DRAFT TO YOU NOW.

We can’t regard the matter as settled.
I finished the work as requested.
He had failed to visit her as promised.
Not all of them had gone well, and fewer still had gone as planned.
Owing to the rain the garden party did not take place as advertised.

Leave in oven until cooked. (可视为在as后省略了it is
It usually happens as described above. (可视为在as后省略了it is

The construction of the school will be completed by the end of this year.

All staff are requested to meet in the conference room at 2 p.m.

It should be said that…

It is obvious that…

It is generally agreed that…

It is well known that…

It should be pointed out that…

It should be admitted that….

It should not be denied that…

It can be confirmed that…

It can be seen that…

It is hoped that…

The car is selling badly.

The stadium filled rapidly.

I was born in Hong Kong.

The vegetables are all cut up.

The car was given to my wife.

( b) In Aust ralia , he t ra velle d a gr eat dea l and ev entu ally
se t tle d down .
2.
( a ) She saw my brothe r in the gar de n .
( b) In the g ar den , s he saw my brothe r .

句( Ia ) 中, in A ust ra lia 既可以解释为t r av elled 和se t tl ed down 的共同的状语, 也可以解
1. Sh e was in t he
g a rden .2. My b rot he r was in th e g ard en . Sh e was in t he
g a rden .

Th er e__________ th e las t piece of ca ke a nd th e last s poonful of ice c ream .
A . we go B . goes
C . go D . ar e lo sing
Th er e was a b ed a nd a big wa rdrob e with a mi rror .( Hemingway )

1. Th e re was a lso an ap p le tree and a pea r t r ee .
2. He r e is a pen , a f ew envelopes and some p ap e r for you .
3. Th e re was an of f ice d esk , a re volving c hai r , books helves , a saf e . . .

1. Th e re were Dalby and Mrs . Dalb y .
2. Th e re were only one or two chap s th e re .

In th e room a n a rm-ch ai r , a t able , and a d esk .
A . th e re ha ve B . th e re is C . there are D . the r e was ( TOEFL 教程)

tireder

the29
the . . .the more tired/ the tireder
【问】
Th e long e r
A
we study ,
B
the mor e t ir ed
C
we ge t .
p .1 13 )
答案为C( 应将th e more ti r ed 改为th e ti r ed er ) 。

big— bigge r , nice— nicer , n eat — nea te r , tidy — tidie r , cleve r —clev er e r , simple—
simpl er

1 . he more ol d we a r e , the more wise we become .( CGE L)
2 . he more ang ry sh e became , th e mor e sh e laugh ed a t him .(LDCE)

wor n—more worn— most worn ,
wounde d—more wound ed— most wounded

Th e highe r th e st a nd a rd of living and th e gr eat er th e n at iona l weal th , th e .
A . gr eat e r is th e amount of pa pe r is u sed
B . gr ea te r amount of p ap er is used
C . amount of pa pe r is u sed is gr eat er
964 the24
D . gr eat e r the amount of pa pe r used ( TOEFL , 86 .5 )

( 即主句) 的谓语动词补上去, 则为:“ th e gr eat er th e amount of p ap er use d is”。
1. T he st ronge r___________ magn et , the gr ea te r th e numbe r of lin es of magn et ic for ce .
A . of B . th e C . is the D . is of th e ( TOEFL , 85 .8)
2. T he coa r se r th e se diment , .

B . a nd th e st eepe r and na rrowe r the b each

Gen er ally t he high er ( is ) t he f eve r , the quic ke r ( is ) th e pulse .

Th e st ronge r magn et , t he gr ea te r th e numbe r of lines of magn et ic for ce .
A. of B. th e C. is th e D. is of the ( TOE FL , 85. 5 )
答案为B( the ) , 而把C( is th e ) 判为错误。
1. T he bigge r the y are[ CSV] , th e h a rde r the y f al l .( RCD)
2. T he la te r you ar ri ve[ASV] , t he b et t e r the food is .( CGEL )
3. T he les s wi t a ma n has[OSV] , th e l es s h e knows th at h e want s i t .( Prov)
1. T he la te r you a r rive , the be t te r th e food is .[ CSV] (CGEL)
2. T he mor e I think a bout i t , t he les s I l i ke i t .[ ASV] ( Cronin )
3. T he mor e so cia lism spr ead s, t he st ronge r become th e forces of peace .[ CVS ]
4. T he n ea re r t hei r doomdr aws , the mor e d espe r at ely wi l l the enemy p ut up
