介词后接过去分词作宾语的用法非常少见，主要见于某些固定搭配或特殊结构，比如当as表示“当作”“按照”时，就可后接某些过去分词。如：

We can’t regard the matter as settled. 我们不能认为这事已经解决。

I finished the work as requested. 我按要求完成了工作。

He had failed to visit her as promised. 他没有按他的诺言来看望她。

Not all of them had gone well, and fewer still had gone as planned. 并非所有的事情都进展顺利，按计划进行的则更少。

Owing to the rain the garden party did not take place as advertised. 由于下雨，游园会没有按照广告说的时间举行。

As it were的意思

As it were又跟as it is(was)不同, 意思是「彷彿」、「似乎是」:

He is, as it were, a walking dictionary. 

As it is的意思

As it is 有兩個意思.

第一個是「事實上」, 如:

I thought he loves me, but, as it is, he loves my friend.

這裡的as it is用在句首, 跟在一個相反的情形後.

第二個是「像它現在的樣子」, 用於句末:

I like the house better as it is. (我喜歡這所房子現在的樣子.)

As it happens vs as we know

試看這兩句：

1. He is an American, as we know from his accent.

2.As it happens, we probably won't have all that much time for a holiday, though.

有何分別？

分別在於， 第一句的as ,是relative pronoun, 第二句的as, 是conjunction.

其他 作 relative pronoun 的 as,的子句：

as if I was

用as if 在於假設語氣上,如果真的用be的過去式,那是否一定要用were?

當然英語老師一定是這樣教的, 用were. 但Quirk等人認為as if it was也是正確的.

究竟as if 是否一定要加用past tense?

以前, 我看過文法書教, as if引出的句子是要用過去式動詞的, 因為是假設語氣或虛擬語氣,但事實上, 是不一定用past tense 的:

He treats me as if I am a stranger.

語言學家在A grammar of contemporary English中說, 若as if子句的意思很明顯是假設的,無需用過去式. 

當然, 用現在式也可表示非假設語氣, 表示陳述語氣, 即引出的句子可能是真的:

He walks as if he is drunk.

所以,無論是陳述語氣或假設語氣, 都可用現在式動詞. 至於是陳述還是假設, 則看上下文了.

as if是什麼詞?

as if是連接詞, 是subordinating conjunction (從屬連接詞):

He talks about his job as if he is very successful.

而as if這副詞子句, 可用to-infinitive作省略:

He talks about his job as if to be very successful.

也可用present participle 或past participle 作省略:

He stops as if waiting for his wife to speak.

He stops as if struck by lightning.

當然大前提是主句和子句的主語一致.

再談As

As 這個字很棘手,為什麼?

大部分中學文法書都教as是連接詞, 例如:

As it appears from her essay, she has read widely in Romantic literature.

但比較少人講as 作為關係代名詞(relative pronoun):

As has been said above, he is a bad guy.

以下就是as 作relative pronoun時的relative clause:

as everybody knows, as you may remember, as I can see, as I have said, as I am told, as you may have heard

as引導的形容詞子句, 可稱為sentential relative clause, 因為很多時也是修飾整個句子的.

所以as作為關係代名詞或連接詞也對, 

有沒有as do I?

我們聽過: When at Rome do as the Romans do.

可否說: When at Rome do as do the Romans?

答: 可以.

He believed, as did his wife, in Jesus Christ. 

as well as 的agreement 問題

My wife goes to church.

My wife, as well as her mother, goes to church.

在第二句中, 雖然句子的主語包含my wife及her mother, 但動詞是單數動詞.

但是,如果句子是:

My wife and her other go to church.

可看到動詞是複數動詞

其實, and 和as well as 為何會不同呢?

原來在英文裡, and 是coordinating conjunction (對等連接詞), 但as well as, along with, together with 等等,卻是quasi-coordinators ( 準對等連接詞).

用準對等連接詞連接主語第一個名詞, 不會影響動詞的單複數..

as well as 等於and 嗎?

起初學英文, 老師一定會說as well as 等於and. 而and又等於in addition to等等.

事實上, as well as 不完全等於and.

當我們用and時, and連接的兩個詞都是具同等重要性的:

I like playing basketball and playing tennis.

但若我們說:I like playing basketball as well as tennis, 其實重點是放在Playing basketball 上. 就如我們說:

I not only play basketball, but also play tennis.時, 重點放在play tennis 上.

而in addition to也跟as well as 相似, 在in addition to後的名詞, 是「降了格的」(R. Quirk語), 是「已知訊息」.

可是, 也要指出, 有時候as well as 真的解作and, 即是在as well as 前後的詞具同等地位.

那麼, 到底as well as 解and還是in addition to呢? 這要看句意和上下文了….

as well as 作為and的意思,我們稱之為對等連接詞.

as well as 作為in addition 等,我們稱之為準對等連接詞.

所以句子:He taught me as well as listened to me. 和He taught me as well as listening to me也對, 但意思上前者是指taught me 和listened to me是同樣重要的,而第二句暗示taught me比listening to me重要. 

As 和while 有分別?

While you are there, can you get me some stamps?

以上這句無問題.

那麼:

As you are there, can you get me some stamps?有無問題?

說有問題的人認為, while 引導持續時間副詞, as引導非持續時間副詞.例:

While my mother was cooking, I was playing computer games.

As my mother knocked at the door, I was playing computer games.

但是, 事實上, as 也可取代while:

As my mother was cooking, I was playing computer games.

所以, As you are there, can you get me some stamps?是正確的.

much as he likes her

__________, he does get irritated with her sometimes.

A. As he likes her much

B. Though much he likes her

C. Much though he likes her

D. Much as he likes her

答案是B也是D.因為 much as he likes her等如much though he likes her. As 作為subordinating connective/conjunction可以解「雖然」.

有人說,嚴格上來說, like應被as代替:

He writes as his brother did when he was young.

因為as 是連接詞,但Like是prepositions:

He writes like his brother.這句便可以.

問:  「Published as it was at such a time, his work attracted much attention. 」有無問題?

答: 問題是句子中的as除了解作因為外,也可解作雖然, 因此產生歧義.

但以「因為」去理解的可能性高一些.

Strong as he was,

問: Strong as he was, he could carry on his back a load of sixty kilograms at a time. 有無錯?

答:無. 句中的as,是subordinate conjunction (connective), 解「因為」, 可以處在這倒置的位置上.
