S.5 Oral lessons

2005 CE past paper
Your principal is thinking of making some changes to improve the quality of learning
and teaching at your school. He is interested in what changes your group
thinks are necessary. You are now discussing it.

You may want to talk about
-ways in which subjects could be taught better
-new subjects that could be introduced
-new facilities needed at school
-school hours and timetabling
-anything else you think is important

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A: Let's get started (standard opening) I am glad that we are asked by the principal to think of some changes our school should make to improve the quality of learning and teaching
at our school. (topic) To start with, let's discuss the ways in which subjects could be taught better.(bridge) I think the lessons of all subjects are very boring. (opinion) The reason
is that teachers focus too much on exam practice. (reason) It would be better if students could learn the matters with fun. (suggestion)

B: Yes, that is very true. (response) Take Chinese literature as an example. Instead of appreciating the works of the great writers, it seems to me that what we learnt is simply for exams, such as the answering techniques. That kills our interest in learning the subject (example+elaboration)

C: I agree that many teachers focus on exam skills. (response) However, they do so because they want to prepare us better  for public exams. (argument). After all, if we cannot get 14 points in HKCEE, we cannot get promoted to S.6. (reason)

A: I understand that getting promoted to S.6 is crucial. (response) But my point is
there is no need to focus on exam all the time. (defend his point) Nowadays many students  attend tutorial classes outside school. They can get exam tips and the past paper answers. Teachers in school should focus more on arousing students' interest in learning. (elaboration)

B: That is to say, our school teachers can teach exam skills in some lessons, and in other lessons, they can make the lessons more interesting. (opinion) For instance, instead of teaching grammar and vocabulary, it would be awesome if teachers play games with us. (example/suggestion)

C: Like what? (asking for clarifiation)

A: Scrabble! I like Scrabble. We can learn more vocabulary through playing scrabble and have fun at the same time. (response+reason)

D: I can't agree any more.

B: I think so too. Through games and competitions, we will be more motivated to learn language because it is more fun. (response+reason)

C: That would be a sensible suggestion. (response)Other than games, there are other ways to help students to learn English in a natural way. (opinion) I think it is equally important to be exposed to English-speaking environment and English culture. (suggestion)
We can practice speaking in English and know more about Western culture when we live in another country. (reason) Also, our listening skills will be improved.

A: Good idea! (response) Apart from the English skills, we can also make friends with foreigners and develop our social skills, which are also of paramount importance. (argument+reason)

B: I can see your point(response). However, can all students afford study tour? (argument) I think we can have more lessons taught by the Net teachers who are already in our school. (opinion) We can practice speaking in English with them and the lessons may be more interesting because they may play more games with us. (reason)
