1. simple sentences
A simple sentence contains a subject and a predicate.
e.g.
a. The advertisement is exaggerative and misguiding.
b. The direct cause of drug -taking is ignorance and curiosity.
2. Compound sentence
A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses, which are connected by conjunctions or connective adverb plus a comma and a semi-colon respectively.
Connected by conjunctions:
a. Some overnight millionaires lead a wasteful and extravagant life, and many impoverished peasants still lead a miserable life and face the dangers of hunger and cold.
b. The government may levy heavy tax on private car owners, or it will develop the public transport.

a. The zoos preserve many forms of wildlife; in addition they keep city people in closer contact with the natural world.
b. Some people drive to get around; moreover, other share taxi rides and take public vehicles to get to their destinations.
3. Complex sentence
A complex sentence contains a main clause and one or more independent clauses.
e.g.
a. Our eating habits have changed drastically since the introduction of western fast food.
b. If everyone is fully aware of obesity and takes effective measure, I am sure that we can lead a healthier life.
4. Compound-complex sentence
If the main clause or the subordinate clauses are connected by conjunctions or connective adverbs, the sentence is a compound-complex one.
e.g.
a. When everyone realizes the significance of environmental protection and adopts some feasible measures, I am fully confident that we can enjoy a cleaner environment.
b. It is true that Olympic Games can promote friendship and boost the economy of the host country, but this is not to say that they are without disadvantages.
