internet

The internet has dramatically altered our lives over the past few decades. Although some of these changes have been negative, the overall effect of this technology has been positive.

What are your opinions on this?

----------------------------

The internet is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it connects human beings. On the other hand, it may contaminate our mind.

Internet revolutionizes the way of communication. In the past people write letters to each other. It is slow. Now we connect with one another through sending emails, and send instant messages via the networking sites such as Facebook, or the instant message softwares in smart phones like whatsapp. We make contact with other people much faster.

The internet also provides us an easy access to information and knowledge. With a click on the mouse, we can find whatever information we want to find. In the past, people go to libraries to find information in books. Now people stay at home sitting in front of the computer and can know all subjects, saving the cost of travelling. It makes the knowledge-searching process much more efficient.

However, the internet is also a path to crimes. There are a lot of pornographic videos and photos which lead people, particularly men, to do wrong things. In my opinion, the pornographic materials are not suitable to adults, not to mention to children and teenagers. The sex videos degrades women, and lure men into indulging in sexual fantasy. Immature people such as children, exposed to these kinds of videos and photos for a long time, will become addicted to sex for the rest of their lives.

From what has been discussed above, I would say parents should remind students of the danger of the internet while they are encouraged to surf the internet for educational purposes. We all should be vigilant to the possibility some criminals may use the internet to steal our money by telling lies. Using the internet wisely, the internet can enrich our lives. (296 words)

ielts 5分答案:

There are various different opinions on the subject of the Internet. WHile some people suggest that it has negatively affected our lives and society, I personally believe that it has actually made the world a much more better place In my opinion there are two main benefits to this technology.

Firstly , I am sure most people would agree that the Internet has improved the way we communicate. Although spending too much time using the Internet instead of talking to real people can cause social isolation, most of us have benefited greatly from email and internet chat programs like facebook. THese useful and powerful communication tools have made it much faster, easier and cheaper to keep in touch with family and friends in other countries and also to do international business.

In addition to this, the Internet provides us with all of the information in the world at work, school and home In the past, research involved spending many hours in the library. Now, however, the same information is available online, Of course, not all of the material available on the Internet is true or useful. Much of the material on the Internet is offensive and some of it is dangerous----there is everything from pornography to instruction on how to make bombs. Nevertheless, I feel that this free movement and sharing of information has generally been beneficial.

To conclude, I once again restate my view that the Internet has had a positive influence on modern life because  of its effects on both communication and the flow of information.

1. negatively affected our society負面地影響了社會

2. cause social isolation 引致社交疏離

3. benefited greatly from 因...受到很大好處

4. ...made it faster, easier and cheaper to ...

5. family and friends

6. much of the ...大部分..

7. there is everything from ... to ...

8. free movement and sharing of information 資訊流動與分享

9. flow of information 資訊流動

ietls 7分答案:

The Internet has brought significant changes to our lives in recent years. Yet, there remains some disagreement as to whether the overall effect of this technology has been positive or negative. While there are certainly valid arguments to the contrary, I personally believe that the benefits of the Internet far outweigh its drawbacks. These benefits are twofold.

First of all, it is an indisputable fact that the Internet has revoluntionised the way we communicate. Despite the risk of social isolation-a problem occasionally seen in people who spend too much time at their computer terminal rather than relating to people in the real world-most of us have benefited greatly from email and internet chat programes like MSN Messenger. These incredibly useful and powerful tools of communicaton facilitate both contact with loved ones in faraway places and global business.

Equally importantly, though, the Internet has placed the entire world (and all the information in it) at our fingertips. In earlier times, conducting research entailed long hours searching library shelves. Now, however, the same information can be accessed at the click of a button. Admittedly, not all of the information available on the Internet is reliable or helpful- there is a vast amount of material online that some would consider offensive or dangerous, ranging from pornography to instructions on how to make bombs. Nonetheless, I would contend that this free flow of information has generally been a very positive development.

By way of conclusion, I once again reaffirm my position that the Internet has had a positive impact on modern life because of its influence on communication and the flow of information.

1. Internet has placed the entire world (and all the information in it) at our fingertips

2. In earlier times

3. conducting research entailed long hours searching library shelves.

4. it is an indisputable fact that

5. there is a vast amount of material online that some would consider offensive or dangerous, ranging from pornography to instructions on how to make bombs

drugs

People in all modern societies use drugs, but today's youth are expertimenting with both legal and illegal drugs, and at an increasingly early age. Some sociologists claim that parents and other members of society often set a bad example.

Discuss the causes and some effects of widespread drug use by young people in modern day society. Make any recommendations you feel are necessary to help fight youth drug abuse.
  • You should write at least 250 words.
  • You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

causes:

People take drugs to escape from the real problems.

effects:

soluton:

Model answer:

Youth drug abuse is a serious problem nowadays in many cultures. Not only is illegal drug use on the rise, but children as young as 10 years old are experimenting with alcohol and tobacco. The reasons for this behaviour are unclear, but certain sociologists blame the examples set by their elders.

Parents who drink and smoke to excess are, in effect, telling their children that it is acceptable to abuse their bodies with drugs. Consequently, children may have a similar view towards illegal drugs, even if their parents are against their use. In addition, drug use shown on television and in films can only confuse children who are also taught at school that drug abuse is wrong.

The pressure on young people to perform well at school in order to compete for jobs is a possible cause of the problem. Many believe they cannot live up to their parents' expectations, and feel a sense of hopelessness. Also, the widespread availability of drugs means teenagers are faced with the temptation to experiment. Drugs are used as a means of expressing dissatisfaction with the pressures they face in society.

The effects of drug abuse are well known. Many young people's talents are wasted, and addiction to hard drugs can cost a user his or her life. Furthermore, those who drink and drive may be involved in fatal road accidents. The cost to society is great, and enormous amounts of money are spent on convicting drug dealers and on education programmes.

To conclude, I recommend that the only sensible way to solve this problem is to educate young people about the dangers of drug use, and to take steps to reduce the pressure of competition placed upon them.

nuclear energy

We have been living in the nuelear age now for over half a century. Since the first atomic bombs were developed, nuclear technology has provided governments with the ability to totally destroy the planet. Yet the technology has been put to positive use as an energy source and in certain areas of medicine.
To what extent is nuclear technology a danger to life on Earth? What are the benefits and risks associated with its use?

You should write at least 250 words.
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
---------------------------

As the saying goes, "Every coin has two sides." The use of nuclear energy has provoked controversy over the years. One the one hand, the advocate of nuclear energy maintains it is clean and efficient. On the other hand, the opponents have been fighting for banning the use of nuclear energy with solid reasons.

The proponents of nuclear energy claim that nuclear energy is cleaner than fossil fuels. Burning of fossil fuels produces greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that is the culprit of the occurrence of the extreme weathers, as we can see in recent years. Nuclear energy is produced by the chemical reaction between the elements. No pollutants are made in the process. Also, nuclear energy  is efficient.  The energy released in a reaction is huge, while the energy produced from burning oil and coals is less efficient.

However, nuclear energy poses a serious threat to human lives with the radiation released in the chemical reaction. The radiation causes cancers in humans. The leakage of radiation in the Tokyo Electric Plants Accident causes panic to the people in the surrounding regions. Animals and plants become extinct due to the radiation. Some people say the accident can be avoided, but as it is, once an accident happens, the result is disastrous.

In my opinion, nuclear energy should not be used whatsoever. It is too dangerous when an accident happens. People should use less energy to avoid the depletion of energy reserves in the world. After all, we have to use energy but not at the cost of bringing detrimental effect on our health, as is the case with the use of nuclear energy.

IELTS Writing Sample #1

---------------

Leisure time is very important for people in the modern world. We work very hard in our work and very often people working in the big cities such as Hong Kong have to work overtime. Leisure time is a time for them to take a break and release their pressure. Some people enjoy watching television drama at home. Some people like to spend time on reading to improve their mind. I think both kinds of activities have their benefits.

Reading can help people to broaden their horizons. In working hours people focus on their job and can only pay attention to a particular subject. For example, if you are an accountant, you deal with numbers and accounts all day long. A teacher who teaches biology only talks about biology in his job. We are all experts to certain extent in our job. Reading can widen our knowledge. When we walk into a bookshop, there are different subjects for us to choose to study, which can add spices to our life. We do not need to focus on our expertise at our leisure time. We are free to read about the topics we are interested in. It not only improves our mind, but also brings us pleasure.

On the other hand, some people insist on watching television drama after work. They think they have used their mind a lot at their work and they need to do things that do not involve much brain-power at leisure time. Watching television drama is a good option. We only sit on our sofa and watch the drama, with little thinking involved. The effect of a drama is direct. It is either interesting or boring. Most likely we do not need to exercise our intellect as often as we do in reading. Other activities that rest the mind include cooking, watching films and so on.

In conclusion, both kinds of activities have their own merits and it is up to the person to choose how to relax themselves. The important thing is through the activity, be it reading or watching TV, they can take a break from work, so that they can maintain a balance of work and leisure and live healthily. (372 words)

言論自由

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:
Is freedom of speech necessary in a free society?
Give reasons for your answer.

Write at least 250 words.
Exam Tip:
Decide whether you agree/disagree completely with the statement, partly agree/disagree with it, or have no definite opinion.

Choose one of these approaches:

State your position in the introduction and then justify it with agreements. This may be more suitable if you feel strongly about the statement.

Present the arguments first and then say what you think in the conclusion. This may be better if you have no strong opinion but can put forward arguments on both sides.
model answer:
In the last decade, there has been considerable debate over the role of free speech in a free society. Some object to absolute freedom of speech. Others advocate free speech, arguing that the freedom of speech is the single most important political right of citizens in a civilized society. Whilst I believe that there are strong arguments on both sides, I would suggest that freedom of speech should be protected in all but extreme circumstances.

The freedom of speech is important at all levels in a society. Yet it is most important for the governments. A government which does not know what the people feel and think is in a dangerous position. This is how the communist regimes of Eastern Europe were toppled in the 1980s. The same is happening again in other regions of the world today. The governments that muzzle free speech run a risk of pushing their people to behave destructively or to rebel.

Furthermore, without free speech no political action is possible and no resistance to injustice and oppression is possible. Without free speech elections would have no meaning at all. Policies of contestants become known to the public and become responsive to public opinion only by virtue of free speech. Between elections the freely expressed opinions of citizens help restrain oppressive rule. Without this freedom it is futile to expect political freedom or consequently economic freedom.

In conclusion, I believe that the importance of free speech as a basic and valuable characteristic of a free society cannot be underestimated. It may be challenging for society to allow differences of opinion out into the open; however, the consequences of restricting free speech are likely to be more damaging in the longer term.
