Leisure
time is very important for people in the modern world. We work very hard in our
work and very often people working in the big cities such as Hong Kong have to
work overtime. Leisure time is a time for them to take a break and release
their pressure. Some people enjoy watching television drama at home. Some
people like to spend time on reading to improve their mind. I think both kinds
of activities have their benefits.
Reading
can help people to broaden their horizons. In working hours people focus on
their job and can only pay attention to a particular subject. For example, if
you are an accountant, you deal with numbers and accounts all day long. A
teacher who teaches biology only talks about biology in his job. We are all
experts to certain extent in our job. Reading can widen our knowledge. When we
walk into a bookshop, there are different subjects for us to choose to study,
which can add spices to our life. We do not need to focus on our expertise at
our leisure time. We are free to read about the topics we are interested in. It
not only improves our mind, but also brings us pleasure.
On the
other hand, some people insist on watching television drama after work. They
think they have used their mind a lot at their work and they need to do things
that do not involve much brain-power at leisure time. Watching television drama
is a good option. We only sit on our sofa and watch the drama, with little
thinking involved. The effect of a drama is direct. It is either interesting or
boring. Most likely we do not need to exercise our intellect as often as we do
in reading. Other activities that rest the mind include cooking, watching films
and so on.
In
conclusion, both kinds of activities have their own merits and it is up to
the person to choose how to relax themselves. The important thing is through
the activity, be it reading or watching TV, they can take a break from work, so
that they can maintain a balance of work and leisure and live healthily. (372 words)
